■ New Year looks different here
Coming from the Philippines, where New Year means fireworks and a loud, full-table celebration with family, the Japanese New Year was something I had to experience to understand.
The first time I went to hatsumode the New Year shrine visit I was not sure what to expect. I drew an omikuji to see what the year might bring, and I bought an omamori to carry with me. The atmosphere was quiet and deliberate in a way that felt very different from what I was used to. Not lesser, just different. The Japanese New Year has its own particular feeling unhurried, intentional, oriented around a fresh start.
■ Christmas is a working day now, and that is fine
In Japan, Christmas is not the family occasion it is in the Philippines. I have gotten used to working through it. The cultural weight here sits elsewhere and for many people, that weight sits on New Year.
I mention this because it changes how I think about the end of the year. In Japan, the real emotional milestone is not December 25th. It is the morning of January 1st.
■ What that morning feels like matters
For a family that has been thinking about buying a home, there is something worth sitting with: what would New Year morning look like in a home that is genuinely yours?
Not a rental where the walls belong to someone else. Not a place you are staying in while you figure out the next step. A home you chose, in a neighbourhood you researched, with a layout that fits your family. The first hatsumode from that address. The first New Year in that space.
That picture is not sentimental for the sake of it. It is a real question about timing. Because if year-end move-in is the goal, the decisions that make it possible need to happen now in November not in December when the year is already closing.
■ The families who get there planned for this month
From what I see in my work, the families who move into a new home before the year ends are the ones who treated November as a decision month, not a waiting month. The final steps full mortgage approval, registration, the handover walkthrough these take time. November is where that time either exists or runs out.
If you are a global family thinking about what New Year looks like this year, and whether it could look different from where you are now, this is a good month to have that conversation.
