What My Camera Can't Show You

Filming a property walkthrough is one of my favorite parts of the job the layout, the light in the rooms, the little details that make a house feel like somewhere someone could actually live. But one of Yatsuka's posts this week reminded me of something my camera genuinely can't capture: the foundation and the flooring structure underneath everything I'm filming.
Once a house is finished, that part is simply gone from view for me, for a viewer watching the video, for anyone walking through it. So I have to be careful about something specific: a video can look reassuring without actually telling you anything about what's underneath it. A well-lit room says nothing about the ground survey, or which foundation method was used, or whether it's the same as another house I filmed in the same development.
This is where my usual rule applies again: I don't let a video imply something I haven't actually confirmed. If I don't know the specifics of what's under a particular house, I don't shoot it in a way that suggests I do. It's a small discipline, but it matters a video is often the first real impression someone gets of a property, and I don't want that impression to promise more than what's actually documented for that house.
It's a strange thing to think about while framing a shot of a nice kitchen, but it's part of what I've learned doing this job: what looks good on camera and what's actually true about the house are two different questions, and I'm only responsible for answering one of them through video. The other one still needs an actual document, not footage.
